Many people fight battles and wars, risking their lives for it. But think of this: is freedom always a battle fought against external enemies? Perhaps not. There are demons outside that have been fought and are being fought as I write this. But the demons within us—our anxieties, insecurities, body image issues—what do we do with them? Am I too fat or too thin? Am I too short or too tall? Curls or straight hair? Specs or contact lenses? Should I hide my greys or flaunt them? Should I eat that muffin or that skinny latte?
We women battle demons every day; not just from patriarchal forces that work in insidious ways, but from the demons deeply entrenched in our psyche due to years of socio-cultural conditioning. Let’s talk freedom from within.
I own myself despite my flaws. Even the moon has scars; so how can I expect myself to be flawless? I own my weight; I own my height; I own my imperfections. I own me. Because there’s only one me. My imperfections make me who I am, and I am not ashamed to claim it. For far too long, I have succumbed to unreal standards laid down by society. Not anymore. I have burned to ashes and, like the Phoenix, come back to life in an avatar that exudes confidence—a confidence born out of acceptance. Me, by myself.
